Material Evolution Appoints New Director Of Research And Development

Material Evolution has appointed Nigel Shewring to the new role of director of research and development.

Nigel brings over 25 years of international R&D experience in the coatings industry and a track record of developing and commercialising sustainable coatings to the growing start-up. With extensive expertise in materials science and innovation, Nigel will drive the company’s mission to revolutionise cement production with sustainable solutions.

In his new role, Nigel will spearhead the strategic vision for Material Evolution’s R&D department. He will oversee the development of next generation ultra-low carbon cement formulations, helping the company achieve its goal of the removal of a gigaton of carbon from the concrete production process by 2040.

He will lead the company’s multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and researchers in pushing the boundaries of material innovation, while fostering collaborations with external research partners and securing funding for groundbreaking initiatives.

“I am thrilled to join Material Evolution at such an exciting time for the company and the industry,” said Nigel.

“Cement production is one of the largest contributors to global CO2 emissions, and I look forward to helping accelerate the pioneering R&D work already underway. Together, we can make a tangible impact on the future of construction – and on climate change more broadly.”

Material Evolution began producing its MevoCem product, which reduces carbon emissions by 85% compared to traditional Ordinary Portland Cement, at its newly launched Mevo A1 Production Facility in Wrexham in 2024. Material Evolution is currently working to deliver new low carbon cement solutions that will help to tackle the material’s drastic impact on our planet.

David Hughes, chief scientific officer at Material Evolution, said:

“Nigel’s appointment marks a significant milestone for Material Evolution. His extensive experience in materials science and leadership in R&D will be instrumental in advancing our sustainable cement technologies. We are confident that under his direction, our innovations will continue to set new benchmarks for the industry, driving both environmental and economic benefits.”

Nigel joins Material Evolution with a distinguished career in R&D leadership, known for his strategic vision and ability to bring scientific breakthroughs to market. His expertise will further solidify Material Evolution’s standing in sustainable construction materials.

Material Evolution is committed to delivering cutting-edge solutions that reduce the environmental impact of the built environment. With Nigel at the helm of R&D, the company is poised to accelerate its mission of creating a more sustainable future.
