Morlais represents a major step forward in Wales’ renewable energy ambitions, offering a unique opportunity to develop a thriving tidal stream energy sector. With strong tidal currents off Holyhead and a clear strategy for enabling development, we have a first-mover advantage in this emerging industry.
The recent £8 million equity investment from the Welsh Government is a crucial step in unlocking the full potential of the Morlais initiative. This funding allows us to match further investment from Ambition North Wales, enabling us to strengthen the grid connection at Parc Cybi in Holyhead. By doing so, we are making it easier for developers to bring their tidal technology to Wales, reducing barriers and helping to scale up the production of clean, renewable energy.
One of the key strengths of Morlais is the plug-and-play model we have developed. For tidal stream energy to become commercially viable, developers need certainty. Without Morlais, individual technology developers would have to navigate the complexities of planning permission, marine licensing, and electricity grid connections on their own. By securing these permissions in advance, we have removed many of the risks that could otherwise slow down or even deter investment in the sector. This means that developers can focus on innovation and scaling up their technology, rather than having to manage complex regulatory processes from scratch.
Ensuring that the benefits of Morlais extend beyond energy generation is central to our approach. Menter Môn is committed to keeping economic benefits within North Wales, and that includes maximising opportunities for local businesses. We have a dedicated supply chain officer working closely with developers and local firms, facilitating introductions and encouraging partnerships. Whether in advanced manufacturing, engineering, or computing, the skills required for tidal stream energy development already exist in our region. Many of these capabilities have roots in industries such as Anglesey Aluminium and Wylfa, meaning we have a skilled workforce ready to contribute to this new and exciting sector.
Our focus is not just on the present but on the future workforce as well. We are working with local schools, colleges, and universities to showcase the opportunities that this sector presents. Inspiring young people to consider careers in tidal energy will help ensure that North Wales remains a centre for innovation in renewable energy for years to come.
While Morlais is geographically specific to Holyhead, its potential impact extends far beyond this one location. There are several sites around Wales with similarly strong tidal currents, including St David’s Head, Bardsey Island, and parts of the Severn Channel. Our experience with Morlais can help shape future tidal energy projects across Wales and beyond, reinforcing our position as a leader in this field.
Beyond energy production, the economic opportunities are significant. We are already seeing interest from manufacturers looking to set up operations in Anglesey to produce tidal turbines and related technology. With the right support, we could develop a manufacturing base in Wales that exports tidal energy solutions around the world. Additionally, the expertise we are building in environmental monitoring and technology deployment can create high-value jobs in the knowledge economy, benefiting the wider region.
This is an exciting time for Wales. With strong backing from the Welsh Government and a clear strategy for scaling up the sector, we have a unique opportunity to lead the way in tidal energy. Morlais is not just about generating electricity – it is about creating a sustainable economy, supporting local businesses, and securing long-term skilled jobs. With continued investment and collaboration, we can turn our natural resources into lasting economic and environmental benefits.
