An Overview on The North East Wales National Park Designation Project

The North East Wales National Park Designation Project aims to establish a new National Park in the region based on the existing Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Project objectives

The project seeks to designate a fourth National Park in Wales, being the first since 1957, with a focus on natural beauty and opportunities for open-air recreation. The Welsh Government has commissioned Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to evaluate the feasibility and benefits of the designation.

Current status

NRW has established a dedicated team to lead the project and ensure compliance with legislation. They are conducting an evidence-based evaluation, considering the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources (SMNR) principles, nature recovery and climate adaptation and mitigation.

Engagement events

In 2023, NRW plans to hold engagement events to gather information from local communities and stakeholders. These events will provide opportunities for individuals and organisations to share their perspectives on the National Park proposal. Dates and locations will be announced on the project's information page and through local networks.

Public consultation

A public consultation period is scheduled for 2024, during which, feedback on the National Park proposal can be submitted. Opening and closing dates for the consultation will be clearly communicated on the project's information page.

How to get involved

Interested parties can express their interest in the engagement events and receive updates on the National Park proposal by emailing [email protected]. It is important to provide your name, postcode and state your interest.

Statutory Landscape Designation Procedural Guidance

A comprehensive document detailing the technical aspects of the designation process is available upon request. It provides in-depth information on the statutory process that must be followed.

Conclusion

The North East Wales National Park Designation Project is progressing towards its goal of establishing a new National Park in the region. With the involvement of local communities, stakeholders, and the public, the project aims to ensure the preservation of natural beauty and create opportunities for open-air recreation. Interested individuals are encouraged to stay informed through the project's information page and actively participate in the upcoming engagement events and public consultation.

Together, we can shape the future of North East Wales and leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.
