Cwmbran-based Festive Productions, famed for its Christmas decorations, is ringing in a greener holiday season by leading in how they manage their waste.
Festive, a manufacturer and retailer of Christmas decorations, has revolutionised its waste management practices over the past year. The company has significantly increased its recycling rates and cut down on waste sent to landfill. Aiming for zero landfill by the end of 2025, Festive has already reduced its landfill-bound waste by nearly 25%.
Neil Tucker, Maintenance Manager and Site Electrician at Festive said:
“We began preparing before the law came into effect, so by the time April arrived, the system was already running smoothly. We’re really proud of the progress we’ve made, recycling around 65% of our waste and reducing our municipal waste collections from four to three per year. The transition was seamless, and it’s become a part of our day-to-day operations.
“Our products are seasonal, so a lot of waste can accumulate quickly. By staying on top of our recycling, especially during the peak months, we’re ensuring that even our busiest time of year remains as environmentally responsible as possible.”
The team put in place a separate bin system to capture all the recyclable materials. They also recycle their batteries and carrier bags, and have plans to expand further. Their efforts have not only boosted environmental performance but also saved them money, with Festive benefitting from money back for baled cardboard and plastic waste.
Neil added:
“The key to our success has been getting everyone on board, from seasonal staff to full-time warehouse operatives. We’ve focused on education and continuous learning, and the response from our team has been overwhelmingly positive. Everyone is more diligent, and we’re constantly looking for new ways to improve.”
On 6 April, the new recycling law started in Wales. Meaning that all workplaces are now required to separate their waste for recycling. The aim of the new law is to improve both the quality and quantity of recycling, helping Wales to become a zero-waste nation by 2050.
Huw Irranca-Davies, Deputy First Minister with responsibility for Climate Change, said:
” Festive Productions is an excellent example of how businesses can not only comply with the new law but are seeing the environmental and financial benefits it brings. By taking proactive steps to improve their recycling practices, they’ve shown that it’s also creating long-term value for the company.
“The commitment Festive has shown to reducing waste and exploring innovative recycling solutions should inspire others across Wales to do their part.”
In just 20 years, Wales has gone from recycling less than 5% to recycling more than 66% of our municipal waste and is now ranked second in the world. This helps to save around 400,000 tonnes of carbon emission every year. The law will continue to improve these recycling rates and support Wales’ commitment to become a zero-waste nation by 2050.
