SSE Energy Solutions and CCR Energy Sign New Strategic Energy Partnership

Energy infrastructure expert, SSE Energy Solutions, has signed an agreement with CCR Energy to explore innovative energy solutions for the old Aberthaw coal powered plant in South Wales.

CCR City Deal purchased the plant in 2022 and created CCR Energy to demolish, clear, and remediate the site in readiness for redevelopment into an exemplar for secure green energy production in the region, with the potential to create thousands of jobs.

SSE believes the project presents a unique opportunity to integrate peripheral assets and explore traditional and disruptive technologies, and aligns perfectly with their commitment to decarbonise energy, heat, and transport, while also creating and supporting low-carbon jobs and delivering a financial boost for local communities.

SSE and CCR Energy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which will see the former invest in advanced technologies for power networks, heating and cooling systems, electric vehicle charging and energy management, generation and storage which will provide the footprint, template and confidence the region can meet the demands of Industry 4.0.

Carl Davies, Director of Commercial, SSE Energy Solutions

Carl Davies, Director of Commercial at SSE Energy Solutions said:

“We aspire to be the UK’s leading provider of local clean energy infrastructure. This agreement with CCR Energy means that we can work together to deliver innovative green projects, create good green jobs and create social value in Aberthaw and across South East Wales.”

Councillor Bronwen Brooks, Chair of CCR Energy, said:

“The Aberthaw Power Station redevelopment continues to provide some spectacular opportunities not only locally, but also regionally.  The emerging relationship with SSE Energy Solutions will help us realise the benefit of our assets and leverage investment in this innovative and exciting green energy-focused site.”
