Collaboration in Action

In this panel discussion held at the recent RenewableUK Cymru Future Energy Wales conference, Stefan Messenger, the environment correspondent at BBC Wales News, delves into the complex landscape of renewable energy delivery and the challenges of cooperation between the governments of Wales and the UK.

Guests include Will Henson, Head of Energy at the Office of the Secretary of State for Wales in the UK government. Claire McDonald, Deputy Director of Economic Policy for the Welsh Government and Rebecca Williams, Director for Wales at the Crown Estate.

The conversations highlight the intricacies of the devolution settlement, where control over energy-related aspects such as funding, planning, and grid infrastructure is not always clear.

Stefan emphasises the recurrent issue of collaboration between Westminster and Cardiff Bay, which arises in various reports, industry discussions, and government announcements. The devolved powers and political dynamics add to the complexity of this relationship.

Both the Welsh and UK governments share similar goals when it comes to renewable energy and decarbonisation, with targets set for clean energy sources and net-zero emissions by 2035 and 2050, respectively. However, there are policy differences in how to achieve these goals.

The video discussion also acknowledges the role of the Crown Estates in shaping energy and climate change ambitions, as they interact with both governments and provide unique insights into the collaborative efforts required to make progress in this crucial area.
